Bees fall in overtime in CCAC Tourney semifinals
A flurry of late threes had St. Ambrose eight seconds away from a spot in the CCAC Tournament championship game. But it wasn't meant to be.
St. Francis scored with 7.5 seconds left to force overtime and the No. 2-seeded Saints outscored the Bees 13-8 over those extra five minutes to defeat SAU 95-90 in a tournament semifinal game Friday night in Joliet, Ill.
On a big offensive night for both teams, St. Ambrose trailed 72-60 with five minutes left in regulation.
Then the Bees caught fire from beyond the arc.
Two 3-pointers from Guillermo Narbona and another from Collin Wainscott over a 67-second spurt made it a one-possession game with just under four minutes remaining.
Narbona and Wainscott each added another three to close the gap to a single point at 80-79 with 1:17 to play.
Then it was Kieran Farrell's turn.
After a stop gave the ball back to the Bees, the senior from London, England, drilled a three from the corner with 15.2 seconds on the clock to give SAU its first lead since early in the first half.
But seconds away from extending its season, St. Ambrose couldn't get a final stop. St. Francis (22-7) powered inside for a layup to tie the game with 7.5 seconds left.
Solomon Garrison slipped as he drove down the court and his jumper bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
The Saints started overtime with a three-point play and never surrendered the lead. The Bees got to within a single point four times, the last time coming on an Ignacio Dacunda layup with 36 seconds remaining.
But USF again got a basket in the paint and an SAU turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass, led to two last Saint free throws in the final second to account for the final score. St. Francis will play at Governors State for the tournament championship Monday.
St. Ambrose (14-16) shot better than 60 percent from the floor, hitting 37-of-61 attempts. The Bees were also 9-of-22 from 3-point range with six of those makes coming over the final five minutes of regulation. SAU's only shooting struggles came from the line as the team was just 7-of-12 on free throws.
St. Francis, meanwhile, shot nearly 58 percent from the field (34-of-59), hit 11-of-26 from beyond the arc, and made 16-of-17 from the line, including all seven attempts in overtime.
Narbona was 15-of-20 from the floor, and 4-of-5 from deep, in scoring a career-high 35 points.
Dacunda shot 9-of-14 in dropping in 22 points. He added 15 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Wainscott made 7-of-10 shots, including 3-of-5 from 3-point land, to score 19.
Ryan Kenney added five points, Garrison had four, Farrell finished with three and Nikos Gerokostas netted two in the Bees' season finale.
