Late free throws send SAU past Olivet Nazarene

Limited to just six second-half minutes due to foul trouble, Igancio Dacunda hit three big free throws in the final three seconds to lift St. Ambrose to a 78-75 win at Olivet Nazarene in a quarterfinal game of the CCAC Men's Basketball Tournament Wednesday night.

The Bees will now travel to Joliet, Ill., for a semifinal game at St. Francis Friday night.

Dacunda re-entered the game with 3:11 to play with the Bees nursing a 73-71 lead but in the midst of a Tiger run. ONU scored the next four points with Dacunda back on the floor to cap an 8-0 spurt to take a 75-73 lead.

With just over a minute left, Dacunda powered inside for a layup to tie the score. Then, after forcing a miss, SAU put the ball back in the hands of Dacunda.

With the clock winding down, the senior from Concordia, Argentina, drove to the rim and was fouled with three seconds on the clock. He hit the first free throw to give the Bees the lead before missing the second.

Olivet Nazarene (19-10) ultimately advanced the ball to mid-court and called a timeout with 2.4 seconds remaining.

Not done, Dacunda intercepted the inbounds pass under the basket and was fouled again. And this time, with 0.2 seconds left, he knocked down both free throws. An ONU desperation three at the buzzer was well off the mark sending SAU to the CCAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since the University joined the league in 2015-16.

It was a measure of revenge for the No. 6-seeded Bees.

St. Ambrose (14-15) was defeated by Olivet Nazarene twice during the regular season by five points and four points. The postseason matchup was also close throughout with the Bees' late 73-67 lead the largest advantage either team had. That was immediately followed by the 8-0 Tiger run, setting up Dacunda's heroics.

Both teams shot at least 50 percent from the floor with SAU shooting 53.3 percent (32-of-60) and ONU shooting right at 50 percent (29-of-58).

Five Bees scored in double figures, led by Guillermo Narbona's 17 points. He also added four rebounds and four assists.

Dacunda finished with 14 points to go along with 11 rebounds and six assists.

Collin Wainscott hit three 3-pointers on his way to 12 points.

Nikos Gerokostas came off the bench to score all 11 of his points over a four-minute stretch in the second half. He scored nine in a row for the Bees, capped by a triple that gave the team a 63-58 lead midway through the second half.

Kieran Farrell scored 10 points. Farrell and Ryan Kenney (eight points) each hit two threes in the win. Solomon Garrison made a big contribution with six points, three rebounds and four assists.

Now St. Ambrose will face a St. Francis team they also lost to twice during the regular season. USF tied ONU for second place in the CCAC and is currently 21-7 overall.
