Bees fall to CCAC-leading Governors State

Conference-leading Governors State shot nearly 58 percent from the floor in holding off St. Ambrose 89-76 in University Park, Ill., Wednesday night.

The Jaguars finished 33-of-57 from the field to shoot .579 for the game. The Bees, who knocked down nine 3-pointers, shot 28-of-63 for a .444 mark.

St. Ambrose (12-15, 9-10 CCAC) was down just four at 36-32 following a Nikos Gerokostas layup with six minutes remaining in the opening half. But Governors State (19-8, 15-4 CCAC) answered with a 3-pointer that kicked off an 11-0 run that extended the Jaguar lead to 47-32.

Despite six quick points from Collin Wainscott on a three-point play and a 3-pointer, the Bees trailed 53-40 at the half.

SAU got within eight several times in the second half, the last time coming at 76-68 on a pair of Solomon Garrison free throws with 4:51 left. But GSU again had the answer, responding with five straight points to rebuild an 81-68 advantage.

The Bees made a final push with Garrison's three trimming the deficit to 83-74 with just over two minutes on the clock but the Jaguars answered with a triple of their own to seal the win.

Guillermo Narbona led SAU with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Ignacio Dacunda scored 14 to go along with four rebounds and five assists. Nolan Deitrich dropped in 11 and Garrison had 10 and four assists.

Wainscott netted nine points, Ryan Kenney had five, Gerokostas finished with four and Zane Witt added two.

Alec Platipodis grabbed three rebounds in his five-minute stint.

The Bees will close the regular season Saturday at Holy Cross.
