St. Ambrose falls in overtime on Senior Day
St. Ambrose was outscored 13-9 in overtime to fall 91-87 to Olivet Nazarene on Senior Day in Lee Lohman Arena Saturday afternoon.
Before the game, SAU recognized its five seniors playing at home for the final time - Noah Overturf, Cam Weed, Tyler Zeman, Ignacio Dacunda and Kieran Farrell.
Then the Bees got off to a rough start, falling behind 20-12 just over six minutes into the contest.
But Nikos Gerokostas and Guillermo Narbona combined for the next 12 points with a Gerokostas layup giving the Bees a 24-20 lead.
The early eight-point advantage for the Tigers and the four-point edge for the Bees proved to be the largest leads for each team.
The game was tied 41-41 at the half and the teams traded baskets throughout the second half.
Olivet Nazarene (17-9, 13-5 CCAC) built a 78-73 lead with two minutes remaining in regulation. But layups from Dacunda and Gerokostas reduced the margin to a single point with a minute left.
St. Ambrose (12-14, 9-9 CCAC) got another stop and Guillermo Narbona was fouled with 20 seconds on the clock. He hit the first of two free throws to tie the game at 78-78. Narbona missed the second but Collin Wainscott tracked down the offensive rebound. Wainscott had a shot at the win but his baseline jumper in the final second bounced off the rim to send the game to overtime.
SAU fell behind 84-80 three minutes into the extra session but Farrell made a layup and Narbona knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Bees an 85-84 lead inside the final minute.
ONU regained the lead on a jumper with 33 seconds left. Narbona had a good look for the lead but his shot rolled off the rim, leading to two Tiger free throws for an 88-85 lead.
After both teams missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Wainscott was fouled and connected on both from the line to close the margin to 88-87 with just three seconds remaining. But with St. Ambrose scrambling, Olivet Nazarene inbounded the ball deep down court, leading to a three-point play in the final seconds to finish the scoring.
SAU shot better than 58 percent from the field and made 9-of-20 from beyond the arc. ONU shot nearly 56 percent overall and hit 12-of-24 from deep.
Narbona led the Bees with 27 points. He added six rebounds, six steals and four assists.
Dacunda finished with 17 points, four rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Gerokostas recorded 14 points and five boards. Wainscott dropped in 13 points.
Farrell finished with eight points, Solomon Garrison had five and Nolan Deitrich added three.
The Bees will visit CCAC-leading Governors State Wednesday.
