SAU defeats CCAC-newcomer Mount Mary
Ten different Bees put down at least two kills as St. Ambrose rolled past Mount Mary 25-19, 25-10, 25-21 Tuesday night in Milwaukee, Wis.
SAU hit .267 for the match and hit better than .200 in each of the three sets. Mount Mary, meanwhile, hit at a .017 clip.
The Bees got off to fast starts in all three sets.
In the opener, kills from Ines Marques and Sofia Pabon came as part of a 3-0 start. After Mount Mary (4-26, 1-15 CCAC) closed to within 8-5, a four-point run, featuring kills from Olivia Johnson and Grace Beitzel and an ace from Marta Barriguinha, pushed the advantage to 12-5. St. Ambrose (12-17, 6-10 CCAC) led comfortably the rest of the way.
Beitzel, Emily Hickerson and Barriguinha had kills and Alexa Orozco recorded an ace to push the Bees to a 6-2 lead early in the second. Johnson, Marques and Beitzel had kills as part of a six-point spurt that turned an 11-7 lead into a 17-7 margin, and the Bees cruised from there.
The Blue Angels had four quick hitting errors to allow the Bees to grab a 4-1 lead to start the third. Minutes later, a six-point run, which included two kills apiece from Pabon and Chloe Fabry, extended the lead to 12-3. The Bees were not challenged the rest of the way.
Beitzel led the Bees with eight kills. Barriguinha finished with five and Johnson, Pabon and Hickerson each added four. Orozco, Marques and Fabry put down three kills apiece, and Larkin Calay and Ella Karmenzind each finished with two.
Marques led all players with 30 assists. Orozco picked up a team-best 13 digs. Kennedy DeBaillie came up with 11 and Barriguinha added nine.
SAU will return home to host Calumet Tuesday.
