ONU outlasts SAU in five-setter
Despite three Bees finishing with double-digit kills, St. Ambrose lost a five-set match at Olivet Nazarene 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 15-13 Tuesday night.
After falling behind two-sets-to-one, St. Ambrose (9-15, 4-8 CCAC) forced a decisive set with a late push in the fourth.
With the score knotted at 21-21, Marta Barriguinha sandwiched kills around a block from Ines Marques and Hannah Krouse to give SAU a 24-21 advantage. Olivet Nazarene (8-18, 6-6 CCAC) fought off a pair of set points before a Marques kill forced the fifth set.
A Barriguinha kill tied the final set at 1-1 before the Tigers went on a five-point run. Another Barriguinha kill was followed by two more ONU points as the Tigers went in front 7-2.
A three-point spurt, capped by a Krouse ace, got the Bees to within two points at 7-5. The deficit was 8-6 following a Grace Beitzel kill. Olivet Nazarene answered with three straight points to regain control.
Down 12-7, St. Ambrose made a final charge. Alexa Orozco had two kills, Sofia Pabon added one kill, Krouse had a block and Kennedy DeBaillie served up an ace as part of a 6-2 run that closed the gap to 14-13. But the rally ended there as an ONU kill closed out the match that lasted more than two hours and 20 minutes.
Beitzel led the Bees with 19 kills. Pabon finished with 11 and Barriguinha added 10. Marques and Chloe Fabry each had three kills, while Krouse, Orozco and Emily Hickerson finished with two apiece.
Marques recorded a team-leading 38 assists to go along with 14 digs. DeBaillie picked up 19 digs and Larkin Calay added 11. Krouse was in on six total blocks.
The Bees will have a week off before visiting Trinity Christian next Tuesday.
