St. Ambrose unable to keep up with Saint Xavier

St. Ambrose ran into a Saint Xavier team that could do no wrong Thursday night as the Bees fell 25-11, 25-17, 25-22 in Chicago.

Saint Xavier (6-4, 4-1 CCAC) had just eight total hitting errors in the match. St. Ambrose (7-10, 2-3 CCAC) had eight errors alone in the opening set.

The Cougars finished with a .366 hitting percentage while the Bees hit at a .115 clip, which was aided by a strong third set.

After a Chloe Fabry kill opened the match, SXU took control. The Cougars won eight of the next nine points to leap in front 8-2. A seven-point run midway through the set pushed the margin to 18-6 and the Bees trailed by double digits the rest of the set.

Three Grace Beitzel kills and an ace from Ines Marques had the second set squared at 6-6 early. But seven of the next eight points went to Saint Xavier and St. Ambrose was never able to recover.

The third set went back and forth with an Olivia Hoskins ace knotting the score at 17-17. Fabry put down two kills and Sofia Pabon had another as the match was tied as late as 22-22. Beitzel's attempt at the lead was blocked and the Cougars followed with two more points to wrap up the three-set victory.

Beitzel led the team with 16 kills while recording just four hitting errors. Fabry (eight) and Olivia Johnson (three) were the only other Bees with multiple kills.

Marques was credited with a Bee-best 24 assists. Kennedy DeBaillie collected 11 digs. Larkin Calay had seven digs, Marta Barriguinha added six, and Alexa Orozco, Adriana Diaz and Marques finished with four each.

SAU will return home to host Judson Tuesday.
