Antonanzas and Miecznikowski recognized by LAC

In helping St. Ambrose win its third straight Liberal Arts Conference (LAC) Championship, Leyre Antonanzas and Rob Miecznikowski were recognized by the league.

Antonanzas was named the Women's Swimmer of the LAC Championships and Miecznikowski was named the Women's Coach of the Championships following the conclusion of the four-day event held in Mount Pleasant, Wis.

Antonanzas won three individual events and was part of three first-place relays.

Antonanzas won conference championships in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.92), the 400-yard individual medley (4:36.49) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.02).

The senior from Pamplona, Spain, helped the Bees win three relays. She teamed with Bryn Kiley, Grace Bobeldyk and Sophia Ewanic to win the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:54.62. Antonanzas, Irene Artabe, Bridget O'Grady and Anna Gute won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:49.04. She also joined Gute, Bobeldyk and Kiley to finish the 400-yard freestyle relay in a winning time of 3:36.38.

Miecznikowski won his second straight Coach of the Championships award after guiding the SAU women to a total of nine individual conference championships. Antonanzas won three, Kiley won both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle races, O'Grady won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events, Artabe won the 100-yard butterfly, and Bobeldyk won the 1650-yard freestyle.

The Bee women won a total of four relays, including the 400-yard medley relay consisting of Artabe, O'Grady, Ruthie Gemmen and Gute.

The St. Ambrose women finished with 606 points to defeat second-place Asbury (410) by nearly 200 points.

The SAU men also won their third straight LAC championship. The Bees piled up 670 points to swim past the rest of the five-team field.
