A late second half Panther push upends the Bees 3-2

The Bees dropped a close 3-2 decision at Division One foe, University of Northern Iowa earlier today. A first-half goal from Lauren Malone allowed some breathing room entering halftime. But, the Panthers would score two late unanswered goals to secure the 3-2 victory Wednesday evening.

SAU showed a sluggish start as they fended off 15 first-half shots and ten total corner kicks. Grace Kuchar and the back line remained solid as Kuchar grabbed seven saves to keep the Panthers scoreless. Lauren Malone would find the first breakthrough goal with a high ball soaring into the back of the net. This allowed St. Ambrose momentum and a 1-0 lead going into half time.

That would not last long as UNI's Gross scored to wash things at one a piece early in the second-half. Tied at 1-1, UNI would put some pressure on the Bees defense but they did not fold. Kendall Wendt forced the Panther's goalie into a save shortly after. Then, Malu Garuba Coelho had a crack at the net with a top shelf cannon. No later than seven seconds, Jenna Horst, found herself with her first goal of the season. The Bees led 2-1 with the Panthers on their heels.

St. Ambrose would remain in control until the 85th minute, when UNI would respond with a goal of their own. Things were tied at two all but not for long. The Panthers would continue with three consecutive shots to put the Bees on their heels. With minimal time on the clock, the Panthers found what would be the eventual game-winner to lead 3-2. Mia Vetter fired off a late shot with seconds remaining but it would not be enough as St. Ambrose drops the 3-2 decision.

Lauren Malone and Jenna Horst each found their first goal of the season.

Kuchar ended the match with eight total saves as she faced eleven shots on goal to keep the Bees in the contest.

This loss drops the SAU to (1-2) as they continue a tough early season schedule at #25 Benedictine Sat., Aug. 31. Kickoff is slated for 2.p.m. at Legacy Field in Atchison, Kan.
