SAU builds early lead, coasts to win over Crimson Wave

An aggressive St. Ambrose team got off to a fast start and never looked back in defeating Calumet 73-45 Wednesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

Behind a stifling defense and a parade of trips to the line, the Bees were able to build an 18-2 lead eight minutes into the contest.

In that first quarter, SAU harassed CCSJ into six turnovers and a 3-of-15 mark from the floor. The Bees, meanwhile, knocked down six shots in the frame, while adding seven free throws in 12 attempts. The team also did not commit a single turnover in the period.

St. Ambrose (10-10, 7-5 CCAC) led 21-7 after one and continued to extend the lead from there.

The margin grew to 35-15 at the half and eventually ballooned to 35 points in the fourth quarter.

Calumet (5-13, 2-9 CCAC) finished 17-of-57 from the floor (29.8 percent) and misfired on all seven of its 3-point attempts. The Crimson Wave also committed 20 turnovers.

The Bees received contributions throughout the lineup.

Abby Wolter led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds. She was 5-of-9 from the field.

Payton Calouette came off the bench to net 12 points. Caitlyn Thole chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Bailey Boddicker scored eight points while Olivia Harter and Jayla Stirgus each dropped in seven. Harter added six rebounds and three assists.

Isabella Hutchinson finished with five points. Erin Jolin and Elly Doe each scored three. Emma Rutter and Mary Gruber added two points apiece. Jayla Frasz and Megan Lind each came down with a rebound in the win.
