Pedro Zang put down 21 kills against just two hitting errors and Michael Bos had 16 kills without a single error to lead St. Ambrose to a 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23 victory over Augustana Tuesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.
Zang and Bos each hit over .725 to help the Bees hit .426 as a team.
SAU's best set offensively was the first, when the team totaled 17 kills and had just a pair of errors to hit .577.
Leading 19-17, the Bees received kills from both Bos and Zang during a 4-1 run that opened up a 23-18 advantage. After Augustana (4-3) won back-to-back points to get within 23-20, a Viking service error gave St. Ambrose (8-3) a set point.
And on "Chuck the Chill" night, Felipe Prieto's ace not only closed out the set, but allowed fans to show their support for Humility Homes and Services by tossing new socks, hats and gloves onto the floor. All the items were collected and will be delivered to Humility Homes to help support individuals experiencing homelessness in the Quad-City community.
Augustana bounced back to win the second set and built a 20-16 lead in the third.
But aces from Kam Dixon were sandwiched around a Bos kill during a five-point run that gave St. Ambrose a 21-20 lead. The Vikings tied the set at 21-21, but an Augustana serving error and hitting error, along with a block from Zang and Anthony Anderson pushed the Bees in front 24-21. Three points later, a Zang kill closed out the set.
The fourth set was also close throughout with SAU nursing a 19-18 lead late. Kills from Bos and Zang brought some breathing room. With the team leading 23-21, Zander Larson and Charlie Flynn teamed on a block that earned three match points. SAU needed them all as finally a Flynn kill closed out the four-set win.
Flynn finished with seven kills. Dixon added six and Ian Cordes had four. Anderson had a team-best 42 assists while Prieto chipped in with eight. Anderson and Ethan Karban each came up with six digs and Larson picked up five.
SAU will open CCAC play Friday at home against Viterbo.
