Late layup sinks St. Ambrose in overtime

Up two points with the ball and 35 seconds left on the clock, St. Ambrose couldn't hold on as Mount Mercy scored the final four points, including a layup at the buzzer, to escape Lee Lohman Arena with an 88-87 overtime victory Tuesday night.

Two late turnovers proved to be the difference.

The first came on the inbounds with those 35 seconds remaining. Mount Mercy (7-7) got the steal and scored inside to tie the game at 87-87.

Then with the Bees playing for the final shot, the Mustangs intercepted a pass and raced the length of the court to convert a game-winning layup as the clock expired.

The stunning finish came after a late Bee rally forced overtime.

St. Ambrose (4-7) trailed 72-60 inside the final four minutes of regulation and were down 74-65 with under three minutes left.

But in the next minute, Ignacio Dacunda and Nolan Deitrich scored, and following a Dacunda steal, Collin Wainscott buried a 3-pointer to close the gap to 74-72.

The run reached nine points as Guillermo Narbona knocked down a game-tying jumper with 52 seconds left. The Mustangs regained the lead on a pair of free throws with 32 seconds on the clock. Wainscott had a look at a go-ahead three but it was off the mark. Narbona tracked down the offensive rebound and drilled a long two-pointer to send the game into overtime.

The teams traded baskets in the extra session with Narbona's 3-pointer putting SAU in front 87-85 with 1:17 left. The Bees got a stop to get the ball back and called timeout with 35 seconds to go, leading to the final sequence.

Narbona led St. Ambrose with 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Dacunda also posted a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 11 boards.

Deitrich and Wainscott each hit four 3-pointers in scoring 16 points and 14 points, respectively. Kieran Farrell netted five points.

The Bee bench only contributed three points, those coming from Zane Witt.

SAU will visit Oakland City Friday.
