IU South Bend pulls away late to defeat St. Ambrose
Indiana South Bend shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half and pulled away late for a 79-71 win over St. Ambrose Saturday afternoon in Lee Lohman Arena.
In a back-and-forth CCAC battle, the Bees led 35-34 at the half.
Nolan Deitrich knocked down a 3-pointer and Ignacio Dacunda scored four straight points to help SAU open a 42-37 lead early in the second half.
St. Ambrose (3-6, 1-3 CCAC) last led at 62-61 on a Collin Wainscott three with five minutes remaining.
But the Bees, who were whistled for 18 fouls in the second half, were plagued by foul problems down the stretch.
Down 64-62, Guillermo Narbona fouled out with 3:18 to go. Then, just over a minute later, with the Bees trailing 67-64, Dacunda picked up his fifth foul.
With their top two scorers on the bench, the Bees watched the Titans push their lead to 74-64 inside the final minute. Wainscott hit two threes, including one as part of a four-point play, but SAU never got closer than six points from there.
The big second half allowed Indiana South Bend (4-4, 3-1 CCAC) to shoot nearly 54 percent for the game. The Titans also attempted 32 free throws to the Bees' nine, which included a 25-6 edge in the second half.
All five Bee starters scored in double figures.
Wainscott and Deitrich each hit five 3-pointers in scoring 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Dacunda scored 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds and five assists. Narbona threw in 12 points and Kieran Farrell scored 10.
The SAU bench accounted for just five points, with Kevin Williams scoring three points and Zane Witt adding two.
The Bees will take a break from conference play by hosting Emmaus Thursday.
