St. Ambrose overwhelms Culver-Stockton 47-14

A second-straight St. Ambrose victory came via a total team effort.

The offense piled up 506 yards of total offense. The defense picked off four passes. The special teams contributed a pair of field goals and only punted once. It all added up to a 47-14 win at Culver-Stockton Saturday afternoon.

The Bees rolled for 265 yards on the ground, led by Zaire Wilcox and Tre Jenkins. Wilcox carried the ball 19 times for 161 yards and a touchdown, and Jenkins added 81 yards and two scores on 17 attempts.

SAU also did it through the air. Alec Ponder was an efficient 21-of-34 for 241 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jaylen Brazzle (eight catches, 45 yards) and Joseph Spaulding (two catches, 36 yards) each hauled in a touchdown pass. Kameron Bohnsack finished with 93 yards on five receptions.

After punting following a three-and-out on the opening drive of the game, St. Ambrose (3-5, 2-1 Heart) would score on its next eight possessions.

Jenkins scored on an eight-yard run to tie the game at 7-7. Ponder found Spaulding on a 12-yard touchdown to give the Bees a lead they would never relinquish. In the second quarter, Brazzle hauled in a six-yard touchdown in between a pair of Harvey Doleman field goals, the last one a 52-yarder on the final play of the first half that gave SAU a 27-7 lead.

SAU continued to pour it on in the second half.

Ponder (three yards) and Jenkins (14) scored on touchdown runs in the third quarter, and after Culver-Stockton (4-4, 2-2 Heart) scored, Wilcox capped his huge day with a six-yard TD run to account for the final score.

And while the offense picked up 30 first downs and converted on 11-of-14 third-down attempts, the Bee defense more than held its own.

Caden McDermott intercepted three passes and finished with a team-best six tackles. Alex Hartmann also picked off a pass.

Colin Gudella was in on five tackles, Caleb Ballard made four stops and Emmanuel Howard, Nolan Obert, CJ Resto and Hartman were credited with three tackles apiece.

Tyler Wilson's 47-yard punt coming in the opening minutes of the game was the only SAU punt of the afternoon.

Maximo Vasquez added to the rushing numbers with 20 yards on four carries. Colin Shults, Braden Downs and Wilcox each caught at least one pass in the win.

St. Ambrose will look to extend its winning streak to three games when the Bees return home next Saturday to host Clarke at Jack and Pat Bush Stadium.
