Bees erupt for 82 points in big win over Owls

Everything finally clicked for the Bees Saturday night.

St. Ambrose got contributions from its offense, defense and special teams in dismantling William Woods 82-5 at Jack and Pat Bush Stadium in Davenport, Iowa.

The 82 points are the second-most in program history, finishing short of the 95 points the 1912 team scored against the Tri-Cities Indees. It was also the third-largest margin of victory in SAU history.

Alec Ponder completed 13-of-18 passes for 226 yards and five touchdowns, tied for the seventh-most touchdown passes by a Bee quarterback in a game. Caleb Swanson played most of the second half and went 4-for-5 for 63 yards and two scores.

Kameron Bohnsack (95 yards) and Brennan Wilson (55 yards) each hauled in two touchdown receptions. Joseph Spaulding, Colin Shults and Jaylen Brazzle had the other scoring catches. Taylor Warfel and Braden Downs also had multiple catches.

Tre Jenkins led a ground attack that finished with 336 rushing yards. He carried the ball 17 times for 155 yards and a touchdown. Zaire Wilcox had 15 attempts for 95 yards and found the end zone three times. Jaedyn Price added nine carries for 57 yards.

In all, the Bees finished with 625 yards of total offense. The team scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, four in the second and three more in the third before tallying two more in the fourth.

While St. Ambrose averaged 9.2 yards per play, the SAU defense limited William Woods (0-4) to 202 total yards, an average of 2.8 yards per play.

The Bees forced three turnovers and eight punts. The defense did not allow a point until William Woods kicked a 27-yard field goal on the final snap of the game. The Owls' other two points came on a blocked extra point return late in the second quarter that cut the Bee lead to 47-2 at the half.

Alex Hartmann and Andre Cobige had interceptions. Nolan Obert, Caden McDermott and Caleb Ballard each forced a fumble, and Rolando Sepulveda recovered one.

Obert, who led the team with three tackles-for-loss, also blocked a punt that Mikey Brow recovered in the end zone.

Billy Mutz had a team-best seven total tackles. Payton Walker was credited with five tackles. Obert, Jon Grant and Cooper Starks were each in on four stops. Ballard recorded the team's lone sack.

Harvey Doleman converted 10 extra-point tries and produced four touchbacks on his 13 kickoffs.

Tyler Wilson was on the field to punt once, but the Owls were flagged for roughing the kicker on the play, giving the Bees a first down on a drive that ultimately concluded with Ponder's 27-yard touchdown pass to Spaulding that pushed the lead to 41-0 in the second quarter.

St. Ambrose will face a big challenge next Saturday when the Bees open Heart of America play at No. 1 Grand View.
