Bees beat York at season-opening tourney

St. Ambrose rallied from a two-set deficit to take down York 19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13 on the first day of a two-day tournament hosted by Clarke.
After claiming both the third and fourth sets, the Bees' overcame a pair of three-point deficits in the decisive fifth set - first at 3-0 and later at 10-7. Kills from Alexa Orozco, Emily Hickerson and Hannah Krouse; a block from Orozco and Krouse; and a Kennedy DeBaillie ace came part of a 6-1 run that turned that late deficit into a 13-11 advantage.
York responded with two straight points to draw even at 13-13. But an Ella Karmenzind kill and an ace from Ines Marques closed out the comeback victory.
Karmenzind led a balanced attack with 11 kills. Orozco and Sofia Pabon each put down 10 kills. Marta Barriguinha added nine and Krouse finished with eight. Ines Marques (25) and Haley Doucet (21) combined for 46 assists. Adriana Diaz led the team with both 19 digs and five aces. Marques collected four aces and nine digs. Barriguinha picked up 11 digs, Doucet had seven, and Olivia Hoskins and Rilee Talty recorded six apiece. Krouse was credited with a team-best 10 blocks in the win.
The rest of the tournament was filled with close calls for the Bees.
In the team's first match Friday, SAU fell to Waldorf 25-20, 25-22, 33-31. The Bees came up empty despite owning three set points in the final set.
Pabon had a team-best eight kills. Krouse registered seven while Barriguinha and Orozco each had five. Marques handed out 18 assists while Doucet finished with 15. Diaz totaled 11 digs and four aces. Barriguinha picked up eight digs.
Saturday saw St. Ambrose fail to close out a two-set lead in a 21-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-13, 15-6 loss to Madonna. After putting down 14 sets in each of the first two sets, SAU had just 18 combined kills over the last three sets.
Barriguinha and Pabon each had 14 kills. Orozco and Krouse had five apiece while Karmenzind finished with four. Marques and Doucet again led the way in assists with 20 and 14, respectively. Barriguinha was credited with a team-leading 15 digs while Diaz finished with 14.
The tournament in Dubuque, Iowa, ended with a 25-17, 25-17, 26-28, 31-29 loss to host Clarke. Five different Bees (Orozco-12, Krouse-10, Karmenzind-9, Pabon-8, Diaz-7) recorded at least seven kills in the loss. Doucet had 25 assists to lead SAU while Marques finished with 22. Diaz picked up 24 digs, Barriguinha had 18 and Marques finished with 10.
The Bees will play their home opener Wednesday against Culver-Stockton.
