Men and women fall in CCAC Tournament semifinals

Both the St. Ambrose men's and women's tennis teams reached the semifinals of the CCAC Tournament Tuesday in Elkhart, Ind.

The men got there by taking down St. Francis 4-0 in a first-round dual Tuesday morning.

Miguel Sampaio and Samy Khiyara won the only doubles match, claiming a 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot. The No. 3 team of Austin Hutton and Marcus Lang won by forfeit to earn the doubles point. Sebastian Arevalo and Gabriel Guimaray did not start their match at No. 1.

With Hutton earning a forfeit win at No. 6 singles, the Bees got victories from Emilio Palencia and Lang to clinch the meet. Palencia won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 and Lang won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5.

The other three matches went unfinished. Shingai Manyonga led 6-3, 3-1 at No. 3 singles. Guimaray won his first set at No. 2 6-2. Arevalo held a 6-5 lead at the top spot.

The Bees' run ended there with a 4-0 loss to No. 8 Holy Cross.

Sampaio and Khiyara fell 6-3 at No. 2 doubles and Hutton and Manyonga lost 6-0 at No. 3. The top team of Arevalo and Guimaray were locked in a 4-4 tie at No. 1 doubles.

Arevalo (No. 1), Sampaio (No. 3) and Khiyara (No. 5) each lost in straight sets. Guimaray won the first set 6-4 at No. 2 singles but was down 5-3 in the second. Manyonga and Palencia were down in their matches at No. 4 and 6, respectively.

The SAU men finished 12-7 overall and took fourth in the CCAC.

The St. Ambrose women earned the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament to earn a first-round bye.

After narrowly defeating Judson 4-3 in the regular season, the result flipped in the postseason.

The Bees dropped the doubles point as the No. 1 team of Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Julia Turek lost 6-0 and the No. 2 team of Hayden Evans and Catherine Meystrik fell 6-3. Paige Owens and Jenna Smithmeyer won by forfeit at No. 3.

SAU could only win three of the six singles matches to fall 4-3.

Meystrik battled to a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 while Smithmeyer cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. Owens won by forfeit at No. 6.

Aguirre Cortez lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles; Evans fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2; and Turek dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 3.

The women finished 10-8 overall, posting the program's first winning season since 2020.
