Bees split regular-season finale with Olivet Nazarene
St. Ambrose closed the regular season by splitting duals at Olivet Nazarene Saturday. The women won 4-0 while the men fell 4-3.
The women swept the three doubles matches by identical 6-2 scores. Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Julia Turek played at No. 1, Hayden Evans and Catherine Meystrik teamed at No. 2, and Jenna Smithmeyer and Paige Owens played at No. 3.
The Bees closed out the win with victories at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles. Evans won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Turek earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3. Meystrik cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4.
SAU (10-7, 3-1 CCAC) was poised to win two more matches with Smithmeyer holding a 6-1, 3-0 lead at No. 5 singles and Owens up 6-2, 2-1 at No. 6. Aguirre Cortez was locked in a 5-5 tie at the top spot.
The St. Ambrose men (11-6, 1-3 CCAC) also won the doubles point but couldn't win enough singles victories in the competitive dual.
Miguel Sampaio and Samy Khiyara won 6-4 at No. 2 and Shingai Manyonga and Emilio Palencia won 7-5 at No. 3 to claim the doubles point. The top team of Sebastian Arevalo and Gabriel Guimaray fell 6-1.
Needing to split the six singles matches to win the meet, the Bees got just two. Manyonga won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 and Khiyara earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5.
Sampaio fell 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 at No. 3 in the most competitive singles match of the day. Arevalo (No. 1) fell 6-2, 6-1; Guimaray (No. 2) lost 6-2, 6-3; and Austin Hutton (No. 6) was defeated 6-1, 6-4.
St. Ambrose will play in the CCAC Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday.
