St. Ambrose men, women defeat St. Francis
Aided with some forfeit victories, the St. Ambrose men and women defeated St. Francis Tuesday afternoon at the QC Tennis Club in Moline, Ill.
The SAU men moved to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in the CCAC with their 4-0 win.
Gabriel Guimaray's 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles along with Samy Khiyara (No. 5) and Austin Hutton (No. 6) earning wins via forfeit were all the Bees needed after earning the doubles point.
Sebastian Arevalo led 6-4, 3-2 in his match at No. 1 singles when the dual was clinched. Shingai Manyonga and Miguel Sampaio did not start their singles matches at No. 3 or 4, respectively.
Sampaio and Khiyara won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles while the No. 3 team of Manyonga and Hutton won by forfeit. Arevalo and Guimaray led 3-1 in the No. 1 match.
The St. Ambrose women improved to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference with their 4-1 decision.
Like the men, the Bee women used a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles by the team of Hayden Evans and Catherine Meystrik along with a forfeit victory at No. 3 doubles by Jenna Smithmeyer and Paige Owens. The No. 1 doubles team of Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Julia Turek trailed 4-2 in their match when doubles play was halted.
Owens then picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Yeva Shershan (No. 5) and Riley Heiar (No. 6) won by forfeit. Evans was up 6-3, 3-0 at No. 2 singles and Smithmeyer led 6-0, 5-0 at No. 3 when the meet was decided. Aguirre Cortez lost her match at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0.
The teams return to action Thursday at North Scott High School when the Bees host Augustana on Senior Day.
