Spring season begins with victories over Simpson

St. Ambrose started its spring season with wins over Simpson at the QC Tennis Club in Moline, Ill., Sunday. The women won 6-1 while the men won 7-0.

The women dropped just a single match and that came in a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 2 singles. The Bees won the other five singles matches in straight sets.

Chiara Aguirre Cortez was challenged in the first set of her 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Yeva Shershan cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5. The other three Bees each just lost a single game. Jenna Smithmeyer at No. 3 and Riley Heiar at No. 6 won by matching 6-1, 6-0 scores. Catherine Meystrik was victorious 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.

The lone loss was a 6-2, 3-6, 10-12 setback suffered by Julia Turek at No. 2.

The Bees swept doubles play, dropping a total of six games over the three matches. Meystrik and Turek teamed for a 6-3 win at the top spot. Aguirre Cortez and Shersham won 6-1 at No. 2. The No. 3 team of Smithmeyer and Paige Owens earned a 6-2 win.

The men also had little trouble in their 7-0 win.

Sebastian Arevalo's 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles was the most competitive. Gabriel Guimaray did not drop a game in his 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2. Samy Khiyara, Miguel Sampaio and Shingai Manyonga, at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles, respectively, each won by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Austin Hutton's 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 completed the shutout.

Six different Bees combined for the three doubles wins.

Emilio Palencia and Ethan Valtman won 6-2 at No. 1, Jaxson Eisenbarth and Esteban Rocha won 7-5 at No. 2, and Phoenix Hughes and Chase Baird won 6-4 at No. 3.

The SAU women (6-2) will host Central Friday and the Bee men (7-1) will next host nationally-ranked Missouri Baptist on Tuesday, Mar. 10.
