Late singles win helps SAU sweep Dubuque

With darkness forcing the final two matches indoors, St. Ambrose got a late singles win from Riley Heiar to defeat Dubuque 4-3 Tuesday in Dubuque, Iowa.

Heiar bounced back after dropping the second set to win in a third-set super-tiebreaker 7-5, 2-6, 10-5 at No. 6 singles. That handed the Bees the dual-clinching point.

SAU (2-2) also got singles wins from its No. 2, 3 and 4 players.

Hayden Evans was also extended to a third-set breaker in her 4-7, 6-0, 10-3 win at No. 2. Jenna Smithmeyer and Catherine Meystrik won in straight sets at No. 3 and 4, respectively. Smithmeyer picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win while Meystrik earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

The two Bee losses in singles play came in super-tiebreakers. Chiara Aguirre Cortez fell 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 at No. 1 and Yeva Shershan lost 3-6, 7-6, 10-7 after also finishing her match inside.

St. Ambrose lost the doubles point with Shershan and Ellie Farley's 6-3 victory at No. 3 the team's lone doubles win.

The SAU men (3-1) swept singles play en route to their 6-1 win over Dubuque.

Austin Hutton lost the first set at No. 6 before rebounding for a 2-6, 6-0, 10-4 win.

The other five victories all came in straight sets. Sebastian Arevalo won 6-2, 6-3; Gabriel Guimaray won 6-3, 6-3; Shingai Manyonga won 6-2, 6-2; Miguel Sampaio won 6-0, 6-2; and Emilio Palencia won 6-0, 6-3.
