SAU falls to Wis.-Stevens Point to start off season
The St. Ambrose men's and women's tennis teams opened their campaigns with losses at Wis.-Stevens Point Saturday. The men lost 5-2 while the women fell 7-0.
The Bees' two points in the men's dual came in singles action. Gabriel Guimaray picked up a straight-sets 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. At No. 6, Emilio Palencia was extended to a third-set super-tiebreaker in his 6-4, 0-6, 10-8 win.
SAU dropped a pair of three-set matches after winning the opening set. Sebastian Arevalo fell 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles and Shingai Manyonga lost 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. Miguel Sampaio (No. 4) and Austin Hutton (No. 5) each lost in straight sets.
Guimaray and Arevalo also teamed for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
The St. Ambrose women also lost two three-set singles matches. Hayden Evans was defeated 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 3 and Yeva Shershan lost in a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 6 singles 6-7 (3-7), 7-3, 10-6.
The Bees were competitive in the other four singles matches. At the top spot, Chiara Aguirre Cortez lost 6-3, 6-2; Julia Turek lost 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 at No. 2; Jenna Smithmeyer fell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4; and Catherine Meystrik dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision at No. 5.
Turek and Shershan earned a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
SAU returns to action Sunday with both men's and women's duals at Edgewood.
