Bees split two-game stretch, roll past Mount Mercy in conference opener

St. Ambrose wrapped up a two-game stretch with a split, dropping a home matchup to Wisconsin–Stevens Point before responding with a decisive road win at Mount Mercy to open conference play.


vs. Wisconsin–Stevens Point (March 19)

The Bees hosted Wisconsin–Stevens Point on Thursday, March 19th. The Pointers entered the game unbeaten, controlling the tempo from the opening draw, and built a 13-4 win over the Bees.

The Pointers struck three times in the first five minutes and extended the lead to 3-0 before Maeve Flynn broke through late in the quarter with an unassisted goal to make it 3-1. In the second quarter, Karsen Jummati added another unassisted goal for the Bees, scoring in the closing seconds of the first half, but the Pointers answered immediately to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.

After a change in goal for St. Ambrose at halftime, Stevens Point was held to three additional goals. Cailey Kramer converted a man-up free-position chance late in the quarter to bring the Bees' score to three. The Pointers tacked on two more goals in the fourth before Flynn added her second goal on a free-position attempt to close the scoring.

Despite forcing 25 turnovers, the Bees struggled to maintain possession, committing 33 turnovers and converting just 1-of-6 free-position opportunities. Stevens Point also controlled draws (15-4) and held a 40-18 edge in shots.

Flynn led the Bees with two goals, followed by Jummati and Kramer each tallying one. Flynn collected seven shots. Jummati and Laney Cunningham followed with four and two, respectively. Kramer, Brooke Arendt, Sara Casillas, Raegan Dotterer, and Morgan O'Malley each put up one shot. Saige Carlton collected a team high of three ground balls. Four bees snagged two ground balls, and seven battled for one.

In goal, Reina Chrobak and Saige Carlton split time, combining for 11 saves.


at Mount Mercy (March 21)

The Bees bounced back in dominant fashion, defeating Mount Mercy 15-5 behind a fast start and a strong fourth-quarter finish.

St. Ambrose set the tone early, scoring five first-quarter goals. Morgan O'Malley opened the scoring by capitalizing on a free position opportunity. Minutes later, Brooke Arendt took advantage of a man-up chance, netting one off a pass from Kathleen Finnin. Maeve Flynn and Becca Schrage each netted a goal with an assist from Karsen Jummati. Cailey Kramer closed out the first quarter, tallying a goal of her own, assisted by Reagan Dotterer. The Bees continued to control the game in the second quarter. Jummati, with the assist from Eve Hanlon, and Kramer each scored. Schrage capitalized in transition, scoring a man-down goal assisted by Brielle Taylor.

In the third quarter, Abby Vanderwarren kept the momentum going for the Bees, scoring three minutes in from a pass from Flynn. However, Mount Mercy made a push, scoring three times to cut the deficit to 9-5.

The fourth quarter was all Bees. St. Ambrose closed the game on a 6-0 run, fueled by multiple man-up opportunities and a lone free-position. Flynn added three more goals to her total in the final 15 minutes. Kramer added two goals of her own to close out the match. Jummati also found the net while the Bees were man-down to help seal the 15-5 victory.

The Bees dominated possession and pace, finishing with advantages in shots (37-16) and draw controls (15-3).

Flynn and Kramer shared the team's high goal total with four each. Jummati and Schrage collected two of their own. Arendt, O'Malley, and Vanderwarren each netted one goal.

Reina Chrobak was in the net for the Bees, collecting five saves.


The Bees are next in action at home as they take on Missouri Baptist at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 28th.
