St. Ambrose celebrates seniors against No. 2 Benedictine
Saturday afternoon in Davenport, Iowa, the Bees hosted their Senior Day against No. 2 Benedictine. Prior to the match, St. Ambrose honored its six seniors - Abby Messina, Anabelle Brown, Zoe Starkey, Sarah Diehl, Abby Taaffe, and Julieanna Hess.
The Bees came into this match 4-2 conference play and were looking to make a push towards the top of rankings, but fell short losing the game 33-3.
Benedictine, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, opened the game scoring four quick goals. Down 4-0, The Bees got on the board with Brown finding Katie McGlynn open for a goal. SAU followed this up shortly with Brown scoring on a free-position shot. Benedictine, with the 4-2 lead, scored five straight to end the quarter 9-2. Hess started this quarter in goal making one save while Saige Carlton finished it with five stops.
The Ravens carried their momentum into the second where they went on a big run. The Ravens scored 10 straight goals ending the half 19-2. Carlton made five more saves to end the half with 10.
Brenna Weitekamp checked in for the Bees as goalie to start the second half. Benedictine continued its run with seven straight goals in the third. The Bees were unable to find the back of the net and ended the third quarter down 26-2. Weitekamp totaled three saves for the Bees.
The fourth quarter started with the Ravens going on a six-goal run. With two minutes left of play, Brown found McGlynn open for a goal to get the Bees back on the board. Benedictine scored with 37 seconds left to end the game 33-3 in favor of the Ravens.
With this loss, SAU now moves to 4-3 in conference and 5-6 on the season. St. Ambrose will wrap up the regular season Wednesday at St. Vincent's, where they host a conference match against Missouri Valley.
