St. Ambrose grabs home conference win

Saturday afternoon in Davenport, Iowa, the Bees battled Mount Mercy University. The Bees came off two conference losses prior, and looked to bounce back in this conference matchup. Despite the Bees' dominant play in the first half, they allowed the Mustangs to aim a comeback in the fourth, but it was too late as SAU solidified its 15-7 win.

The Bees came out hot with a goal within the first minute from Delaney Cunningham finding Anabelle Brown wide open for a goal. At the 10-minute mark, SAU put in four goals in two minutes of action. The first goal came from Cailey Kramer followed by Morgan O'Malley finding the back of the net thanks to a Brown assist. Karsen Jummati had the next two goals for the Bees, scoring off the draw control and Brown assisting on the second. With no goals in the last eight minutes of the quarter, the Bees took a 5-0 lead heading into the second.

St. Ambrose picked up the momentum and scored early on with Brown striking for a goal. SAU followed this up with another goal from Jummati to get her third on the day. Six minutes later, the Bees found the net again with Katie McGlynn dodging through defenders to get one. With four minutes of play, Mount Mercy put a pause to the Bees scoring by notching in their first to make the score 8-1. Within the last minute of the first half, SAU found energy with Brown scoring a goal off of a McGlynn feed. This put the Bees up 9-1 to finish the first half. Brenna Weitekamp was in goal making three saves in the first half.

With a one-sided first half, St. Ambrose switched goalies and put Julieanna Hess in. Mount Mercy sought to get back in this game by scoring first. However, the Bees answered back a minute later with Cunningham scoring from Brown connecting the pass. The Mustangs battled back to put another one, but the Bees went goal-for-goal with Jummati putting one in and Desire' Adams getting the assist. In the final 30 seconds, SAU received a free-position-shot opportunity and Brown took advantage notching it in to give the Bees a 12-3 lead ending the quarter.

The fourth quarter started slowly until the Mustangs scored halfway through the quarter. After that goal, Mount Mercy was able to score two more unanswered goals. That three-goal run brought the lead down to 12-6. The Bees found energy after Brown scored on a free-position shot. McGlynn shortly followed this up, dodging from X to get another goal for SAU. With 1:56 left to play, the Mustangs scored again to make the score 14-7. In the final 25 seconds, Abby Taaffe scored the dagger goal for the Bees to secure the 15-7 win.

St. Ambrose scored 15 goals with Brown leading the charge with five goals while Jummati followed it up with four goals. Added to the goal count, McGlynn put in two while Cunningham, Kramer, Taaffe, and O'Malley each notched in one. Assisting on goals Brown dished it out three separate times while McGlynn totaled two, with Cunningham and Adams each gathering an assist.

Defensively, the Bees held Mount Mercy to seven goals. SAU had two different goalies log in time with Weitekamp making four saves in 36 minutes while Hess made one save in 24 minutes. Jummati led to several SAU possessions by causing six turnovers. Other Bees that caused turnovers included Taafe with three, Saige Carlton with two, Cunningham knocking two while Abby Messina, Kramer, and McGlynn each getting one.

The Bees are back into action this Saturday when they host conference rivals Benedictine College. This Saturday match will feature their senior day as SAU will look to make some noise.
