SAU falls on the road in conference matchup
Wednesday night, the Bees traveled to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Missouri Baptist University. Despite a hard fought first quarter, SAU could not hold on and lost 22-6.
With the recent Heart of America conference rankings released, the Bees were ranked third while the Spartans were ranked fourth. The Spartans saw this as an opportunity to advance in rankings and took it.
MBU came out hot on their home turf, starting the game on a three goal-run. Halfway through the first, the Bees found momentum with Anabelle Brown scoring three goals in a row with one of them being assisted by Karsen Jummati. Brown's last goal of the quarter came with two seconds left on the clock to tie it up 3-3 ending the first.
After a competitive first quarter, the Spartans found their groove and scored nine unanswered goals in the second. In a dominant second quarter of play by MBU, Saige Carlton was able to make five saves for the Bees. St. Ambrose could not find the back of the net in this quarter and ended the first half down 12-3.
The Spartans started the second half where they left off putting two goals away early. Raegan Dotterer was able to put an end to the 11-goal run, getting the Bees back on the board down 14-4. Missouri Baptist answered back with three more goals to end the quarter 17-4.
MBU kept their run going into the fourth quarter putting in three more goals. St. Ambrose put a stop with Katie McGlynn scoring on a free-position shot. St. Ambrose scored again with Brown notching one in. Missouri Baptist found momentum again and ended the quarter with two more goals finishing the game 22-6.
St. Ambrose fell short in this matchup losing 22-6, but the Bees put up a fight. Brown led the way for the Bees on offense with four goals while McGlynn and Dotterer each put in one, and Jummati had the lone assist for the day. Abby Taaffe and Cailey Kramer stepped on defense each causing a turnover. Carlton had 10 saves through the first three quarters while Brenna Weitekamp played the last quarter making two saves.
With this loss, St. Ambrose is now 4-4 on the year and is sitting good in conference at 3-1. The Bees look to bounce back on Saturday with another competitive conference matchup on the road against Ottawa University.
