Jummati and Brown help Bees split weekend games
St. Ambrose suffered a 5-15 loss to Bethel Saturday afternoon at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex, but rebounded today for a 23-5 win over newly added conference member, Midland University. This is the first win for SAU which moves the Bees to 1-2 on the season.
Saturday, the Bees had a slow defensive start against the Pilots as they allowed seven scores, the most they allowed in any quarter of play that contest. The Bees never found much consistent offensive rhythm throughout the match. However, Raegan Dotterer was able to net a goal for the Bees at the 43 second mark of the opening period, but it seemed too late as they trailed 6-1 at that point.
The Bees held the Pilots to only three scores before the halftime break, but Anabelle Brown was the only Bee that scored in the period before the break to go down 10-2.
Defensivley, SAU locked in and held Bethel to only two scores in the third period while Abby Vanderwarren found the back of the cage for St. Ambrose. She was the only Bee to score for SAU in the third period.
In the final period, St. Ambrose doubled their scoring power as Brown and Morgan O'Malley each scored. But, the Pilots outscored the Bees in every period of play in the 5-15 loss.
After the loss, St. Ambrose rebounded and was able to get into the win column today as they were backed by Karsen Jummati (eight goals) and Brown (six goals) in the 23-5 victory.
The Bees started with the lead and never wavered after they led 6-1 at the end of the opening quarter. SAU netted the first five goals of the match to put the Warriors away.
SAU matched their first period scoring in the following period with goals from Jummati, Dotterer, and Brown to lead 12-4 at the halftime break.
Then, St. Ambrose outdid themselves as they found seven goals in the third period to extend their already defining lead. The scoring slowed for SAU in the final period, but Delaney Cunningham, Jummati, Vanderwarren, and Desire' Adams still netted scores for the Bees in the 23-5 dominant victory.
Dotterer scored four goals as Katie McGlynn added in two scores.
Brown led the Bees in assists with three while Dotterer and McGlynn chipped in one each.
Brown had a team-high eight groundballs. Jummati led the Bees with nine draw controls. Brown controlled seven.
Saige Carlton (three saves) and Brenna Weitekamp (five saves) split time in net for the Bees.
This upcoming week, St. Ambrose will start an almost month long road stint. The Bees will travel to Culver-Stockton on Wednesday. The contest is slated to start at 4 p.m.
