Langlois, Hurning lead Bees at Highland Championship
Gabrielle Langlois and Anna Hurning each placed inside the top 20 to lead St. Ambrose to a sixth-place showing at the season-opening Highland Championship played at Highland Springs Sunday and Monday.
Langlois carded five birdies, including three in the second round. That helped her bounce back from a first-round 86 to fire a 3-over 75 for a 161 total. That was good for 17th place.
The other four Bees on the top team also improved their scores from round one to round two.
Hurning started with an 84 before closing with an 80. Her 164 put her in 19th place.
Addy Heineke shot rounds of 88 and 85 for a 173. Tavia Dowell carded a 175 after rounds of 90 and 85. Aleanna Mendoza rounded out the scoring with a 183 (95-88).
The second-day improvement helped SAU climb the leaderboard. The Bees were in a tie for ninth in the 13-team event after a 348 Sunday. But a 325 on Monday, the fifth-best team score of the day, allowed St. Ambrose to jump into sixth place with a 673 total.
A second Bee team finished 12th with a 736 (370-366).
Lauren Callison and Ellie Rude led that team. Callison fired back-to-back 86s for a 172. That number was matched by Rude, who shot rounds of 87 and 85. Olivia Kappes (96-100) and Avery Rigg (101-95) each finished with a 196.
St. Ambrose will next compete in the one-day Judson Fall Invitational at Pinecrest Golf Club in Huntley, Ill., on Wednesday.
