St. Ambrose puts five on all-conference team
A 30-win season and a runner-up finish in the CCAC were rewarded when the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) announced its postseason softball awards.
St. Ambrose placed a total of five players on the two all-conference teams with Shai Erdrich, Becca Haag, Leah Maro and Taylor Martyn each earning first-team recognition. Shea Meech was named to the second team. Maro also earned a CCAC Gold Glove award. The four first-team selections are the most for the program since six Bees were honored by the Midwest Collegiate Conference in 2013.
Both Erdrich and Haag were named first-team all-conference for the third time.
Erdrich further cemented her name in the SAU softball record. The center fielder from Aurora, Ill., set a school record with 80 stolen bases this season. That is currently the second-best mark in the NAIA. She extended her school-best stolen base total to 227 in her Bee career. The leadoff hitter stole at least one base in 36 games this season and had multiple steals in 26 contests.
Erdrich was more than just a threat on the bases. She batted .364 with a team-leading 56 hits. She had 17 multi-hit games, including a 5-for-5 game against Mount Mary and a 4-for-4 day against Indiana South Bend. Erdrich scored a team-best 55 runs to set a program record with 182 career runs scored.
Haag was second on the team with a .435 batting average and led the way with five home runs and 38 RBIs. She collected six doubles and two triples and drew 24 walks to finish with a .533 on-base percentage. Haag reached base in 40 of her 41 games played this season, only failing to do so when she grounded out in her only plate appearance in a game at Saint Xavier. She had 13 multi-hit games and scored 34 runs.
Over her three seasons at St. Ambrose, the junior first baseman from Muscatine, Iowa, is hitting .389 with 29 doubles, 12 home runs, 86 RBIs and 77 runs scored.
After earning second team all-CCAC honors a year ago, Maro was selected to the first team this season. The junior pitcher from Davenport, Iowa, compiled a 16-8 record with three saves and a 3.31 earned run average. She is currently third in the conference in wins and strikeouts (105) and shares the league lead in saves with Meech. Maro started 26 games, went the distance in 13 of those, and posted a pair of shutouts.
Maro has recorded 29 wins, five saves and 214 strikeouts in 316 innings in three years with the Bees. She has a 3.54 career ERA.
She was also selected to the league's Gold Glove Team after not commiting a single error in 36 total chances this season.
Martyn batted .370, the third-best mark on the team, while leading St. Ambrose with 19 extra-base hits. She led the team with 11 doubles and five triples, and was second only to Haag with her three home runs. Martyn registered nine multi-hit games, including five three-hit contests. The junior left fielder from Oglesby, Ill., added 20 runs scored, 28 RBIs and eight stolen bases.
Meech did a little bit of everything to earn second-team all-conference accolades as a freshman. The utility player from Naperville, Ill., batted a team-high .455 with five doubles and one homer. She scored 11 runs and drove in 18. In the circle, Meech went 4-0 with three saves. She struck out 28 over 46 1/3 innings and threw one complete-game shutout.
The Bees finished 30-19 overall and took second in the CCAC with a 20-7 league mark. The season came to an end in the second round of the CCAC Tournament.
