Regular season ends with losses at Olivet Nazarene
St. Ambrose wrapped up the regular season Sunday by dropping a doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene by scores of 3-2 and 5-3.
The losses dropped the Bees into a second-place tie in the CCAC with St. Francis.
SAU just couldn't get the big hit when it needed to Sunday.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings in the first game. After putting just three runners on base over the first five innings, St. Ambrose (30-17, 20-7 CCAC) came to life over the final two frames.
In the sixth, Shai Erdrich was hit by a pitch to get things started. After she was erased on Anna Engberg's fielder's choice, Becca Haag singled and then stole second to put runners on second and third with just one out. But SAU came up empty as Alena Holder and Taylor Martyn both grounded out to end the inning.
St. Ambrose got on the board in the seventh. Mya Millsaps led off with a double and moved to third on Kylee Claypool's base hit. With one out, Reagan Engberg singled in Millsaps. Brynnlin Kroymann followed with a sacrifice fly to score Claypool, but SAU left the potential tying run on base as Anna Engberg lined out to short to end the game.
Reagan Engberg finished with two of the Bees' six hits. Kylie Schult also had a hit.
Leah Maro took the loss. She allowed six hits and three runs in the complete-game effort.
In the second game, SAU out-hit ONU 9-6 and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Haag's sacrifice bunt that brought in Erdrich. But the Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the first.
After Claypool's double plated Kroymann to get the Bees to within 3-2 in the top of the fourth, the Tigers came right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead to 5-2.
Claypool singled in Martyn in the sixth to account for the final Bee run.
SAU stranded a runner on base in each of the last five innings.
Claypool and Erdrich each collected two hits. Haag, Kroymann, Martyn, Anna Engberg and Reagan Engberg also had hits.
Bianca Shorter was tagged with the loss. She threw all six innings.
St. Ambrose will have the No. 3 seed when the CCAC Tournament begins Thursday in Crown Point, Ind.
