SAU moves to 5-0 in CCAC play by taking two from Viterbo
A doubleheader sweep of Viterbo by scores of 6-3 and 10-4 at St. Vincent's Tuesday afternoon moved St. Ambrose to a perfect 5-0 in conference play.
The Bees have scored 64 total runs over their five CCAC victories.
In the opener, Alena Holder and Shea Meech each had two hits and combined to drive in three runs. Ellie Downing also had a big two-run single, that coming in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie.
After Viterbo (4-19, 1-4 CCAC) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third, Meech singled in Holder and Becca Haag to restore a two-run lead. Holder scored the game's final run in the fifth inning.
Haag, Anna Engberg, Taylor Martyn and Kylie Schult also had hits in the win.
Leah Maro got the win by allowing just one earned run over 5 1/3 innings. She struck out four. Meech recorded the final five outs to earn the save.
St. Ambrose (15-10, 5-0 CCAC) scored eight of its 10 runs over the first three innings of the second game.
Holder and Haag each drove in a run as part of a three-run first inning. After the V-Hawks tied the game in the top of the second, Anna Engberg singled in Shai Erdrich to put SAU back in front.
Reagan Engberg and Holder each had a two-run single in the third to extend the lead to 8-3.
Anna Engberg scored on a wild pitch before Haag ended the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth.
Anna Engberg finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Haag was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs sored.
Erdrich, Holder, Meech, Downing, Reagan Engberg and Mya Millsaps also had hits.
Bianca Shorter went the distance for the win. She allowed only two earned runs over seven innings.
The two teams will complete their three-game series with a game at St. Vincent's Wednesday.
