SAU explodes for 14 runs to open CCAC play with win
Twelve different Bees contributed to a 15-hit attack as St. Ambrose opened CCAC play with a 14-0 five-inning win over Mount Mary in the Ambrose Dome Friday afternoon.
In the first of a three-game series with the Blue Angels, the Bees scored in four of the five innings. And pushed across multiple runs in each of those four frames.
SAU struck right away in the first with Shai Erdrich scoring on a wild pitch and Anna Engberg coming in on Kylie Schult's RBI groundout.
In the third, Becca Haag ripped an RBI triple to score Alena Holder before scoring herself as Mya Millsaps was caught stealing.
St. Ambrose (11-10, 1-0 CCAC) broke things open with a seven-run fourth inning.
Holder, Haag, Schult, Millsaps, Ellie Downing and Taylor Martyn drove in runs as the lead ballooned to 11-0.
Then in the fifth, Kylee Vaughn added a two-run single before Brynnlin Kroymann completed the scoring with an RBI hit.
Erdrich, Haag and Kylee Claypool each finished with two hits. Holder, Schult, Millsaps, Vaughn, Downing, Kroymann, Martyn, Kaitlyn Haag and Amber Gnutek had the other Bee hits.
That was more than enough offensive support for Leah Maro and Shea Meech.
Maro got the win by working three scoreless innings. She struck out three. Meech also struck out three over the final two innings.
The two teams will complete their series Saturday with a doubleheader in the Ambrose Dome starting at noon.
