Bees drop pitchers' dual to Seahawks

A run in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and handed St. Ambrose a 2-1 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Keiser Tuesday afternoon.

The Seahawks took the second game 9-1 in five innings to complete the sweep.

Allyson Harrold was the hard-luck loser in the opener. She allowed just five hits and two earned runs over six innings. Harrold struck out five.

SAU scratched out only one run but stranded eight total runners, leaving at least one on base in six of the seven innings.

Trailing 1-0, the Bees got their run in the fifth. Kylee Claypool led off with a double and moved to third on Ellie Downing's one-out ground out. Mady Reed then beat out a bunt single that scored Claypool with the tying run.

St. Ambrose (12-10) threatened for more in the sixth but left runners on first and second. Keiser retook the lead on a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the inning. The Bees again had two runners on in the seventh but could not capitalize.

Claypool collected two of the Bees' six hits. Reed, Downing, Taylor Martyn and Reagan Engberg had the others.

SAU fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of the second game and never recovered.

The Bees managed just three hits, two of them off the bat of Reed. She led the game off with a single and stole second before getting stranded there. Then in the third, she accounted for the team's only run with a two-out solo home run to left.

Justice Krus had SAU's other hit, a one-out single in the fourth.

Keiser scored a single run in the second before adding five more runs over the third and fourth innings.

Ada Boysen took the loss. Leah Maro and Alyssa Lowery also pitched in relief.

A challenging Spring Break trip will continue with a doubleheader at No. 19 St. Thomas Wednesday.
