Bees drop rematch to Vikings in four sets

Playing for the second time in less than a week, Augustana got a measure of revenge with a 29-27, 25-22, 22-25, 29-27 win over St. Ambrose in Rock Island, Ill., Monday night.

The Bees defeated the Vikings in four sets in Lee Lohman Arena last Tuesday.

All four sets went down to the wire in Monday's rematch.

SAU led 23-21 late in the first and held three set points but came up empty. The Bees fought off a set point when Michael Bos put down a kill with the team trailing 27-26, but a serving error and attacking error followed to hand the set to Augustana.

The second set saw the Bees go in front 17-14 on a Kam Dixon kill. Augustana (6-3) answered with six straight points to take a 20-17 lead. St. Ambrose (10-5) got within two points four different times, the last time on a Bos kill that trimmed the deficit to 23-21, before the Vikings took a two-set lead.

SAU finally broke through in the third. And it came after falling behind 18-11. Anthony Anderson had two kills and a solo block that came part of a huge 13-2 run that put the Bees in front 24-20. St. Ambrose extended the match to a fourth set two points later.

The Bees nearly sent the match to a decisive fifth set. Trailing 24-21, SAU used a kill from Pedro Zang, a solo block from Bos, and an ace from Dixon to erase the three match points. Another Zang kill evened the set at 25-25, and Zang gave the Bees a set point with his 17th kill of the night for a 26-25 advantage.

The Vikings won back-to-back points to take a 27-26 lead. A Charlie Flynn kill again knotted the set before consecutive Augustana kills finally wrapped up the match.

Bos equaled Zang with 17 kills. Dixon also reached double figures with 12 kills. Flynn finished with seven and Kainalu Ka'ahanui added three.

Anderson led the team with 37 assists and nine digs. Ethan Karban picked up eight digs to go along with seven assists. Felipe Prieto registered six digs and five assists. Dixon and Ka'ahanui each notched five digs.

Bos was credited with five total blocks in the loss.

SAU will face No. 14 Morningside and Clarke as the Clarke Tri-Match Saturday in Dubuque, Iowa.
