Bees sweep Clarke in straight sets
St. Ambrose swept the Pride of Clarke University in three straight sets 25-14, 25-23, and 25-14 this evening. The Bees hit for a .591 kill percentage in the opening set as they put down 15 kills as a team throughout the set. In the final two sets, SAU scored 25 points off kills combined.
SAU wasted no time getting on the board.
Kainalu Ka'ahanui took a set from Anthony Anderson and laid a kill down on the floor to extend the early lead for the Bees to 3-1. Then, Charlie Flynn added to SAU's score with a kill of his own. Ka'ahanui grabbed another kill which capped off a four point run for St. Ambrose.
The Bees and Pride exchanged scores just before SAU led 15-8 and then ran away with the set.
Kills by Flynn, Ka'ahauni, and Michael Bos helped St. Ambrose to the 25-14 opening set victory. But, Clarke suffered from missed serves and attacking errors that played a part in the dominant victory.
The Bees and Pride played a back-and-forth second set. St. Ambrose answered every Pride score with a kill of their own. The Bees suffered from four more errors this set than the last set which allowed Clarke an opportunity to keep the set close. The largest lead the Bees ever owned this set was four scores early in the set at 9-5.
Both squads were tied at 21-21, but Pedro Zang, Kam Dixon, and Flynn came through for the Bees. Each Bee scored on a kill attempt within the last six scores of the game, even after a Pride timeout. SAU narrowly missed extra scores this set, but won the set 25-23.
The final set was all the Bees as they cruised to a 25-14 victory and swept the Pride 3-0.
St. Ambrose allowed the Pride to stick around early as service errors faulted the Bees. Once the Bees caught offensive rhythm again, they slowly extended their already cushioned lead.
A kill from Zang started an offensive run for the Bees who scored the last seven of eight points in the set. A. Anderson registered two service aces to finish the set and match for the Bees. SAU captured the 25-14 victory in the set.
Zang registered a team-high 11 kills while Dixon followed with nine put downs. Bos and Flynn added in eight and six kills, respectively.
A. Anderson collected 29 assists and three service aces in the match.
Ethan Karban earned 12 assists in the back line for SAU.
Tomorrow, the Bees travel to Canton, Mo. to face St. Mary-Woods at 1 p.m. and Culver-Stockton at 3:30 p.m.
