Bees split CCAC-opening duals with Judson
St. Ambrose opened conference play against Judson Friday afternoon. The Bee women served up a 4-3 win while the SAU men lost 4-0 at the North Scott courts in Eldridge, Iowa.
The women moved to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in CCAC play thanks to the bottom half of the lineup.
The Bees won the doubles point as Hayden Evans and Catherine Meystrik teamed for a 6-3 win at No. 2. The No. 3 team of Jenna Smithmeyer and Paige Owens won by forfeit to offset the 6-4 loss by the top team of Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Julia Turek.
St. Ambrose then got the three doubles victories it needed to secure the dual.
Meystrik won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Smithmeyer breezed through a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. Owens won via forfeit at No. 6 singles. Aguirre Cortez, Turek and Evans each lost in straight sets at the top of the lineup.
The SAU men moved to 10-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Gabriel Guimaray (No. 2), Miguel Sampaio (No. 3) and Austin Hutton (No. 6) each lost in straight sets in singles play.
The other three matches were halted after the dual had been decided. No. 1 player Sebastian Arevalo held a 7-5, 2-2 lead. Shingai Manyonga trailed 7-6 (7-3), 3-1 and Samy Khiyara was behind 6-2, 5-5 at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively.
The No. 2 doubles team of Sampaio and Khiyara lost 6-3 and the No. 3 team of Manyonga and Esteban Rocha fell 6-1. Arevalo and Guimaray led 5-4 at No. 1 when Judson secured the doubles point.
St. Ambrose will host St. Francis Tuesday at the QC Tennis Club in Moline, Ill.
