SAU opens CCAC Tournament by defeating USF
St. Ambrose opened its postseason run by taking down St. Francis 4-0 in a first-round match of the CCAC Tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Quad-City Tennis Club in Moline, Ill.
Miguel Sampaio and Austin Hutton did not drop a game in their 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. That, along with a forfeit victory by Jaime Febres and Marcus Lang at No. 3, earned the Bees the doubles point. Sebastian Arevalo Piraquive and Gabriel Guimaray led 4-1 at No. 1 doubles when their match was halted after the doubles point had been clinched.
With forfeits coming for Febres at No. 5 and Hutton at No. 6, St. Ambrose needed just one singles win to claim the dual.
That win came from Piraquive, who earned a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 1.
The Bees had leads in the other three singles matches. Guimaray held a 6-1, 4-1 advantage at No. 2 singles; Sampaio led 6-0, 4-1 at No. 3; and Lang was up 6-1, 4-1 at No. 4 before the win was secured and play was stopped.
SAU will play at Holy Cross Thursday in the CCAC Tournament semifinals.
