Ronconi's lone goal was one for the century
The Bees delivered a nail-biter for all at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex this afternoon, in part of SAU's Homecoming Weekend program. St. Ambrose owned the lead for majority of the game after an early second half banger from Ricardo Ronconi in the 46th minute. It took the Trolls until late in the half to find the equalizer and then finally the game-winner as they topped the Bees 2-1.
SAU put together two complete halves but could not outlast the Trolls who are receiving votes to be considered for the top 25 poll. In the match, the Bees earned themselves real chances but Trinity Christian's defense and goal keeper came up big time and time again.
Early on, Joe Campbell found himself in the box on the end of a quality opportunity but his feet came out from underneath him which allowed the Troll defense to recover. Throughout the remainder of the half, each team would get their opportunities but would be shut down immediately.
In the 34th minute, Owen Hull had a crack at goal but the ball eventually drifted wide. This would leave St. Ambrose fans on the edge of their seats. As no more than ten minutes later, Lucas Pizani forced the Troll's keeper to make a save just before the break.
Both sides would heat up in the final period as all three goals were scored in the second half.
To start the second, the Bees kick off lead directly to a corner kick. Sam Flello sent a high flying ball into the box, but Trinity Christian would clear that to Ronconi who gathered the bouncing clearance. The defender sent a rocket back toward the net and into the top shelf over the outstretched hands of the Troll's keeper who stood no chance on the play to net the Bee's only goal in the match.
St. Ambrose held steadfast for the next twenty-five minutes, denying any offensive chances the Trolls threw at the Bees.
The 71st minute changed things as the Bees' had a mis touch on a bouncing ball in their defensive third which the Trolls took advantage of to wash things at one apiece.
SAU was not finished yet as Charlie Leinart's and Pizani's shot on target forced a Troll's goal keeper save.
The Trolls delivered an upper ninety dagger to make the score 2-1 with less than fifteen minutes to play in the match.
The Bees had a few more quality chances to net the equalizer but nothing would fall in their favor as they drop the Homecoming match 2-1. This drops the Bees to 0-8-3 overall and 0-5-1 in conference play.
Ronconi, the lonesome goal-scorer registered two shots on target. Pizani accounted for three of his four shots on goal.
Kai Domagala notched three saves on the afternoon.
St. Ambrose looks to regroup as they travel to St. Francis this Tues. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CST at Memorial Stadium in Joliet, Ill.
