SAU drops Championship game to No. 10 William Penn
Saturday night, St. Ambrose traveled to Oskaloosa, Iowa, for the Heart Tournament championship game against William Penn University. SAU was the No. 2 seed while WPU was the top seed. St. Ambrose started strong, ending the first period tied 2-2, but could not hang with the Statesmen and dropped the match 11-4. This win punches William Penn through to the NAIA National Tournament, and puts a close to the Fighting Bees' season.
Both teams, looking to become the Heart Champions, came out hot and physical. The Bees opened up scoring as Eli Hahn caused a turnover on defense, and ran down the field to bounce it past the goalie for an SAU goal. The Statesmen shortly followed it up with a step down shot from up top for a goal. Still battling at one apiece, Lachlan Hodge took a down-the-alley shot which bounced off the goalie. Hodge was able to catch his own rebound, fake out the defense, and shoot low to high to beat the goalie. With 52 seconds left in the quarter, WPU found the back of the net to tie the game 2-2, which ended the first period.
The Statesmen came out on a mission to start the second quarter and scored two early ones to take the 4-2 lead. To follow this, both teams earned a penalty and each had one in the box which made it an even 5v5 on offense for the Bees. St. Ambrose capitalized on this with Cameron Washington beating his defender at X, and finishing on crease for a goal. Five minutes passed by until WPU scored by dodging down the alley and scoring on the run. That goal ended the first half 5-3 in favor of William Penn.
William Penn started the third quarter scoring at the 13-minute mark with a shot off a dodge from the top of the box. Five minutes later, WPU found the back of the net again with a shot off a dodge from the right wing. About a minute later, the Statesmen struck again, finding an open man on crease to get a goal. That goal put SAU down 8-3 heading into the fourth quarter. Isaac Martinez, the Bees' goalie, minimized the scoring by making 10 saves on 24 shots in the quarter.
Down by five, the Bees were still in the game but needed a run to make a comeback. WPU, with their eyes on the prize, kept their foot on the pedal as they scored again to take a 9-3 lead. Two minutes later, WPU had a man-up opportunity where they capitalized and scored on an outside shot. The Bees, still fighting, earned a man-up opportunity and ran a play where Ryan Swanson found Washington open on crease for goal. William Penn answered right back with a goal of their own. That goal concluded the scoring as St. Ambrose lost 11-4.
In this championship match, Washington led the charge on offense scoring two goals while Hahn and Hodge each notched one in. Swanson had the lone assist on the day, throwing a dime to Washington on crease.
Martinez held it down making 19 saves on the night. Defensively, it was Hahn who led the way causing three turnovers while Lucas Mytych caused two and Myles Mytych caused one.
This loss ended the Bees' run for conference championship, finishing as league runners-up, and concluded their season.
St. Ambrose finished the season 8-8 overall and 7-2 in conference. Highlighting the Bees' season, they ended second overall in conference and had two All-Conference Players; Eli Hahn at LSM and Joe Campbell at defense. Hahn finished as co-defensive player of the year and first team all-conference with 49 caused turnovers and 97 ground balls while also tagging on 16 goals and nine assists. Campbell, as a leader on defense, caused 29 turnovers and handled 48. With young offensive firepower, the Bees will pick up where they left off next season and aim to get back to conference champions.
