St. Ambrose falls short in overtime thriller
Saturday afternoon in Davenport, the Bees battled Columbia College. This competitive conference matchup came down to the wire, but the Bees could not close it out losing 14-13 in overtime.
Both teams came into this game 1-0 in conference, and the game lived up to the hype. The Cougars struck first taking the early lead, but the Bees bounced back with a goal coming from Lachlan Hodge. Ayden Fraelle followed this up with another goal for the Bees with the assist coming from Eli Hahn. With SAU up 2-1, Columbia answered back with two goals of their own. Zakary Brown scored late in the first which tied up the game 3-3.
The Cougars took command in the second quarter scoring two goals to start. Battling back, Hodge scored a goal for the Bees on a man-up play with the feed coming from Cameron Washington. Columbia ended the second quarter with two more goals while the Bees couldn't find the net for the remainder of the half. St. Ambrose headed into halftime down 7-4.
The Bees came out of halftime with new-found energy, and went on a six-goal run. Those six unanswered goals came from six different scorers. The first goal came early in the third quarter from Brown on an assist from Washington. This was shortly followed up by Anthony Lyons, Ryan Swanson, and Washington notching one in. Fraelle then found the back of the net on a cut down field with the pass coming from Washington behind the cage. Hahn had the final goal for the Bees on a fast break play with Washington dishing out another assist. The Bees were up 10-7 after this run, but the Cougars ended the run with two goals of their own to finish up the third quarter 10-9 in favor of the Bees.
St. Ambrose found momentum opening the fourth quarter with a goal coming from Lyons. The Cougars and Bees exchanged goals with Columbia scoring, and SAU following it up with another goal from Fraelle. The Bees were up 12-10, but the Cougars found energy in the fourth quarter going on a three-goal run. The Bees were down 13-12, but late in the fourth quarter Fraelle scored to tie up the game at 13-13. No team was able to score before the clock hit zero, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Cougars won the opening faceoff giving them the ball. Columbia held a long position, and after one missed shot the Cougars found the back of the net to win 14-13.
The Bees fought hard but could not hold out for the win. Impressive play from a couple of Bees with Fraelle leading the scoring for the Bees with four goals followed by Brown, Hodge, and Lyons each notching in two. Hahn, Swanson, and Washington each found the back of the net once. Washington was distributing the ball all game with four assists while Hodge, Swanson, and Hahn each had one. Additionally, Hahn held it down on the defensive side with three caused turnovers and 10 assists. In the cage, Alex Wirth made seven stops on the day. Jack Wiltrout was the FOGO for the day winning 14 faceoffs.
This loss put the Bees 1-1 in conference, but the team will look to bounce back with another conference game on Wednesday at Missouri Baptist.
