Theis narrowly misses cut at NAIA Men's Golf Championships

Carsen Theis fell a single stroke short of the cut line as St. Ambrose saw its season come to a close at the NAIA Men's Golf Championships at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., Wednesday.

Theis was tied for 13th after firing a 1-over 71 in Tuesday's opening round. His Nationals run started on No. 10 and the junior from Grimes, Iowa, shot a 2-under 34 on the back nine Tuesday, which included an eagle on the par-5 No. 17 and a birdie on the par-3 No. 12. Theis was as low as 3-under before a bogey on 18 and three more on the front nine wrapped up his 71.

With the field cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not among those 15 teams following Wednesday's round, and with St. Ambrose out of team contention after some first-round struggles, Theis was in the mix to make the cut all day.

Another birdie on No. 12 was the highlight of his second round. A pair of double bogeys were his undoing. Ultimately, a bogey putt on No. 18 that went around the hole but lipped out was the difference. Theis fired a 77 to finish with a two-round 148, just one shot short of making the cut.

The other four Bees combined for just two sub-80 rounds.

Griffin Smits carded a first-day 77 and followed that with an 81 for a 158 total. After an 83 Tuesday, Jacob Stoetzel responded with a 77 Wednesday for a 160.

Ben King shot rounds of 80 and 85 for a 165, and Mason Steinert fired back-to-back 84s for a 168.

St. Ambrose, serving as host of the NAIA Men's Championship at TPC Deere Run for the 10th time since 2009, totaled a first-round 311 and finished the year with a 319 for a 630 total.

Oklahoma City will take an eight-shot lead into the third round Thursday. The Stars sit at 568 after a second-round 278. Friends is second with a 576 and Lindsey Wilson (579) is third. The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma led Tuesday with a 281 is fourth with a 583.

Oklahoma City's Carter Ray holds the individual 36-hole lead. He shot a 68 and a 70 for a 2-under 138. He is the only player under par. Two players are two shots back with 140s.

The four-round Championship will end Friday.
