Men reach quarters, women 11th, Satterlee leads JV team to title
Freshman Jackson Satterlee put on an inspiring performance, and it led his men's JV team into the Leatherneck winner's circle. The Cedar Falls, Iowa, native averaged 231 for his five games, earning a spot on the Leatherneck Classic all-tournament team.
Competing in a field of 30 JV teams, St. Ambrose JV2 was on target all day on Saturday, building a substantial lead heading into Sunday's baker competition. Although that lead dwindled on day two, the Bees managed to hold on to the top seed heading into the championship match, which set up a showdown with Wisconsin-Whitewater.
After winning the opening two games handily, SAU watched Whitewater fight back to win the next two games, and that meant a decisive Game 5 with the championship on the line. SAU filled every frame, turning in a clean 200 game to claim the title.
Members of the winning squad included Jackson Satterlee (1155-five games), Eli Haack (1028-five games), Logan Boll (1022-five games), Chayce Stouffer (1000-five games), Matthew Edler (770-four games), Derrick Lewandowski (179-one game), Raiden Nakagawa and Colby Kato.
Men's JV1 finished in third place with 8073 pins. The top two seeds were St. Ambrose JV2 (8216) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (8184). The varsity men's three-tournament winning streak came to an end at the Leatherneck. After qualifying as the No. 2 seed, the men fell to No. 7 seed Newman 3-0 in the opening quarterfinal match. Newman continued hot, rolling on to capture the tournament championship. The top-three qualifying seeds in the 40-team field were Mount Mercy (8550), St. Ambrose (8518) and Wichita State (8506).
Tommy Burns was the Bees' leading scorer, averaging 228.8 (1144 pins) for his five games. This earned the senior a second straight all-tournament team appearance. His teammates were Tyler Close (1103-five games), Keaten Bieri (837-four games), Kendric Siders (815-four games), Kevin Magnuson (799-four games), Lucas Hersrud (238-one game), Lucas Finley (181-one game) and Devin Richards (167-one game).
The Bee women took home an 11th-place finish at this weekend's event. There were 28 teams in the field, with the top three seeds being Judson (7688), Lindenwood (7623) and Mount Mercy (7515). Mount Mercy topped No. 5 seed Indiana Tech 3-1 to capture the title.
Women's team members were Emma Taft (967-five games), Marissa Bills (940-five games), Molly Bramble (903-five games), Kayla Staub (878-five games), Brooklyn Schlapkohl (471-three games), Gianna Koszut (254-two games) and Mia Almeida.
