St. Ambrose wins outright CCAC regular-season championship
St. Ambrose claimed its first outright regular-season conference championship for the first time since 2008, and its first-ever outright CCAC regular-season title, after sweeping a four-game series at Calumet Saturday and Sunday.
The Bees left no doubt about it, taking Sunday's games by scores of 14-4 and 19-3.
SAU finished with a 24-8 mark in conference play, winning the crown by a full game over Olivet Nazarene (23-9).
Five different Bees had multiple hits in Sunday's opener as the team totaled 17 hits.
Quinn Flanagan went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Mason Heitzler was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Jake Pauley picked up three hits and scored three times. Filip Milatovic and Aaron Vertuno each finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Michael Stupavsky hit a three-run home run as part of a four-RBI game. Bryce Vorwald collected the other Bee hit. Mason Nauman and Michael Rago each scored a run.
Trailing 1-0, the Bees scored twice in the bottom of the first and then added four runs in the third. They tacked on eight more runs over the next four innings to close out the seven-inning victory.
Connor Bird picked up the win after striking out four over four innings. Michael Moise allowed just one hit over three scoreless frames to get the save.
St. Ambrose (29-19) then pounded out 15 more hits in the series finale.
Rago's two-run home run followed Nauman's two-run triple to cap a five-run first inning. Stupavsky added a solo shot in the third.
Pauley recorded three hits while driving in four and scoring two times. Milatovic, Stupavsky, Vorwald and Rago each had two hits and combined for seven RBIs and eight runs.
Nauman and Heitzler had a hit and three RBIs apiece. Nauman and Luke Brabham also had hits.
Brandon Cusack got the win after working 3 2/3 innings. Jack Kerpan, Noah Chase and Matt Donovan pitched in relief.
SAU earned the top seed in the upcoming CCAC Tournament.
