SAU completes four-game series sweep of Trinity Christian

After rallying for two wins Friday, St. Ambrose completed a four-game series sweep by defeating Trinity Christian by scores of 6-3 and 5-4 Saturday in Palos Heights, Ill.

Jake Pauley, Filip Milatovic and Mason Heitzler each had two hits, and four Bee pitchers combined for nine strikeouts while allowing just five total hits in the opener.

It was Heitzler's two-run home run in the second that got SAU on the board, and the Bees took the lead for good in the fifth.

Michael Rago reached second on a one-out error. He then stole third and when the catcher's throw got away, Rago scored to put St. Ambrose in front 3-2.

The Bees created some breathing room in the sixth. Michael Stupavsky led off with a double and Matthew McBrien followed with a single to put runners on the corners. McBrien stole second, and with one out, Heitzler was intentionally walked to load the bases. Eric Gonzalez came through with a big two-run single and Rago then singled in Heitzler to extend the lead to 6-2.

Trinity Christian scored once in the eighth and had two runners on before Aidan Stratton entered and got a ground ball to end the inning.

Stratton ran into trouble in the ninth giving up a single and a walk to start the inning. But a double-play ball and a groundout to short got him out of the jam.

David Biedron went the first four innings to earn the win. Michael Moise struck out four over two scoreless innings. Noah Chase worked 1 2/3 innings before Stratton recorded the final four outs to earn the save.

Bryce Vorwald had the other Bee hit.

St. Ambrose (13-10, 8-2 CCAC) got off to a fast start in the second game. Aaron Vertuno singled in Luke Brabham and Rago's sacrifice fly to center scored Mason Nauman as part of a two-run second inning.

After the Trolls got to within a run, Rago and Pauley had run-scoring hits in the fourth to push the lead to 4-1.

Trinity Christian (11-14, 5-8 CCAC) pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to again get within a single run at 4-3.

But in the seventh, Nauman lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Peter Mitchell for an insurance run.

Brabham finished 2-for-3 while Pauley, Rago, Nauman, Vertuno and Sam Wampler each had one hit.

Brandon Cusack went six innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out five to get the win. Jack Kerpan entered in the seventh and allowed back-to-back one-out hits around a wild pitch to give up a run before closing things out to pick up the save.

SAU is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene Tuesday.
