Bees fall to Tigers in first two of four-game set

Olivet Nazarene used five big innings to sweep a doubleheader from St. Ambrose by scores of 9-0 and 14-3 Thursday afternoon at NelsonCorp Field in Clinton, Iowa.

The Bees scratched out six hits in each game and combined to commit seven errors over the two games.

SAU had just one extra-base hit in the opener, a double off the bat of Jeremy Conforti, part of his two-hit game. Jake Pauley, Joey Fitzgerald Jr., Brandon Matias and Filip Milatovic each singled.

The game was scoreless until the third when the Tigers pushed across three runs. They added three more in the fourth and three again in the seventh.

Michael Betancourt took the loss. Sergio Marchizza and Justin Lane pitched in relief.

St. Ambrose led in the early stages of the second game.

After ONU went in front 1-0 in the top of the first, SAU got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Daniel Laughery beat out a bunt single and moved to second on a Pauley sacrifice bunt. Laughery stole third, and with two outs, came home on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, Sam Wampler plated Brandon Roth with a single to left. On a double steal with Bryce Vorwald taking third and Caden Thode advancing to second, the Tiger catcher's throwing error allowed Vorwald to score for a 3-1 lead.

That advantage held up until the sixth.

Four hits, four walks and a hit batsman allowed Olivet Nazarene to score six times. The Tigers pushed across another run in the seventh to go in front 8-3.

ONU put things away in the eighth.

Three hits, two walks and two more hit batters led to another six-run inning for Olivet Nazarene that broke things open.

Carson Johnson was tagged with the loss. Jacob Bosse, Hayden Kingsbury and Chase Martin each entered out of the bullpen.

St. Ambrose (5-11, 2-4 CCAC) and Olivet Nazarene (7-10, 3-3 CCAC) will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader in Bourbonnais, Ill., Friday afternoon.
