St. Ambrose announces 2025 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees
St. Ambrose Athletics Hall of Fame
St. Ambrose will welcome Drew Chuipek (men's golf), John Darmody (men's cross country/track & field), John Furlong (football coach), Kourtney (Burkhalter) Mannall (women's soccer) and Don "Duke" Schneider (legacy award) into its Athletics Hall of Fame on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, as part of Homecoming Weekend. The five will comprise the 35th class of inductees into the University's Hall of Fame.
Drew Chuipek posted the best-ever finish by a St. Ambrose golfer at the NAIA Men's Championships when he came in fourth at the 2006 national tournament. He followed that up a year later by finishing in a tie for 21st at the 2007 Championships. Chuipek was named a First Team All-American and the Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) Player of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. Over those two years, his scoring average was a 72.9 over 60 competitive rounds. After graduating in 2008, Chuipek was selected to represent the United States in the World University Games in South Africa in September of that year.
As a seven-time All-American, John Darmody remains one of the most-decorated student-athletes in school history. He earned All-American honors in both the mile and the 1500-meter runs three times (2009, 2011, 2013), and in the outdoor 800-meter run in 2013. Darmody, a four-time cross country national qualifier, won MCC Cross Country Championships and the Athlete of the Championship award in both 2009 and 2012. He was selected the MCC Indoor Track Athlete of the Championships in 2009, 2011 and 2012, and won the outdoor honor in 2010 and 2013. The 2012 graduate still holds school records in the mile and 1500-meter runs.
John Furlong was a three-time NAIA District 15 Coach of the Year (1984, 1985, 1987) and lifted the St. Ambrose football program to national prominence. After fielding nearly an all-freshman team in 1982, Furlong compiled a 41-10-3 record over the next five seasons, which included three trips to the NAIA National Playoffs. His 1987 team ended the year ranked No. 3 in the country while his 1984 and 1985 squads finished No. 6 in the nation. Furlong coached 12 All-Americans and 53 All-District selections over his eight years leading the Bees, and 18 of his players are in the St. Ambrose Athletics Hall of Fame.
Kourtney (Burkhalter) Mannall was a four-time all-conference selection, earning first-team recognition in 1999, 2000 and 2001, for the women's soccer team. She was named to the all-region team three times and twice received All-American honorable mention (2000, 2002). She is second all-time in program history in wins (49), shutouts (31) and saves (589), and recorded a career 1.33 goals-against average. Her 183 saves during the 2002 campaign remain a single-season school record. Mannall, a 2003 graduate, led the 1999 and 2000 teams to conference championships and regional-tournament appearances.
Don "Duke" Schneider will enter the Hall of Fame with a Legacy Award. For more than 40 years, he helped promote St. Ambrose athletics with his work behind the scenes. As Operations Manager of the University's television station, Schneider helped broadcast numerous St. Ambrose athletic events and coaches' shows. A familiar face at seemingly every home athletic event, Schneider, a 1976 graduate, provided video highlights for SAUtv, local media outlets and the athletics website for years. More importantly to him, Schneider taught, mentored and maintains contact with hundreds of communications students across the country.
